Description
Armadillo officinalis (often sold as the Spanish “hissing” pill isopod) is a bold, charismatic species that curls into a near-perfect ball and can produce a faint hissing/rattling sound when disturbed—caused by rubbing their legs while curled up.
They originate from the Mediterranean region (many hobby lines trace to Spain), and they thrive in well-ventilated enclosures that run on the drier side compared to most tropical isopods. A classic setup is a dry-to-moist gradient: keep most of the enclosure dry with plenty of leaf litter and cork bark, and maintain one corner as a moist “hydration zone” with damp moss/soil so they can self-regulate.
